Default Napoli v Liverpool: When the moon hits your eye like a Napoli Ultra's belt-wrapped fist...

After our edgy win at Anfield last year, there is likely to be even less love lost with the Napoli Ultras in Naples, so hoping our travelling contingent stay safe. Napoli are clearly the next best team in our group and will pose a difficult test and one we failed last season. That said, we are a different animal this year, so I'm hoping for a better result with no incidents/injuries.

Klopp rested Hendo for this game, clearly and Bobby was always going to start this match, so we will likely go with our strongest available line-up, as follows:

    Adrian

    TAA Matip VvD Robertson

    Hendo Fabinho Gini

    Salah Firmino Mane

Added bonus here is that it is our most difficult game, so we get it out of the way early on and can correct if the result goes against us. Of course if we win, it makes life an awful lot easier. I suspect a draw.

Yup an injury free (for both players and supporters) draw here would be a good result but still hoping for a win.

Well, that wasn’t in the script.

So, a dive and a mistake. No worries. If this was a two-legged tie I'd expect us to go through. As a group stage result it doesn't bother me much.

I think it was proof of what a triumph VAR has become. It's well worth slowing down the only professional sport that isn't excruciatingly slow in order to get offside-by-an-eyelash calls correct and defer to incompetent refereeing on vital calls. I understand that we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but either make the right calls (and destroy the game) or just abolish VAR and live with faulty refereeing. Pick a lane.
‘How many mistakes are you allowed?’ Klopp asked the fourth official. ‘Because if it’s 15, you’ve got one left.’

There was a lot more to Napoli's tactics than keeping Firmino quiet, but once you do, our attack needs help and a midfield of Henderson, Milner and Fabinho is not best equipped to do that.

Interesting that Salah largely spent the whole game on the right wing; he and Mane didn't switch as they often do. Of course Salah is not noted as a defending attacker which meant that TAA had a torrid time all night, though he did reasonably well.

VAR was meant to take the errors out of the game, certainly in the penalty box. Errors such as a ref getting a call wrong or not seeing an infraction. Correcting an unseen infraction is a good thing, but when it comes to getting a call wrong, we're reduced to eliminating one area of subjectivity (getting it wrong) with another - a clear and obvious error. All that has really happened is that the subjective nature of the decision has been moved from the ref to the video screen. It's still a subjective call.

I have a suggestion to UEFA, EPL, etc.
Either (1) fix the rule about when VAR can be used or:
    (2) At the beginning of each match, each team will draw a random number from 0 or 1, and the game starts at M:N (instead of 0:0) where M and N are the random numbers drawn from each team.
